It was another eventful day for India in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 as the country won three gold medals, including a historic gold in Badminton Mixed Team. The other golds came in men’s team table tennis and shooting where ace shooter Jitu Rai won the yellow medal in the men’s 10 metre Air Pistol event.

The Indian mixed badminton team won its maiden Commonwealth gold, thrashing three-time defending champions Malaysia in the final. Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwik Rankireddy gave India the lead defeating Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh 21-14, 15-21, 21-15.

Kidambi Srikanth then took on former world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles, defeating him 21-17, 21-14 in straight games in just 43 minutes to give India a 2-0 lead.

Although the men’s doubles’ team lost to Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan, Saina Nehwal outsmarted Soniia Cheah 21-11, 19-21, 21-9 in the women’s singles to give India a historic victory.

The Indian men’s Table Tennis team then matched their female stars, defeating Nigeria 3-0.

Earlier in the day, ace shooter Jitu Rai won the gold in the men’s 10 metre Air Pistol finals while compatriot Om Mitharwal clinched the bronze. Mehuli Ghosh won the silver and Apurvi Chandela took the bronze in Women’s 10 metre Air Rifle shooting event.

The other silver came in weightlifting with Pardeep Singh coming second in the men’s 105-kg event.

Meanwhile, Hima Das of Assam made it to the 400 metre semi-finals after finishing third in her heat.

India with a total of 19 medals — 10 golds, four silvers and 5 bronze — are currently third in the medal tally.
