Four elephants were killed in Assam’s Hojai district on Saturday night after being run over by a speeding train. The accident took place when the Guwahati-Silchar passenger train was crossing the Hawaipur Railway Station. Four elephants died on the spot while another was critically injured. Later it was tranquilised and shifted to Kaziranga National Park for treatment.
On the other hand, though no passengers were injured, the engine of the train derailed due to the impact. It should be noticed that the accident took place in an area that has already been identified as an elephant corridor.
According to sources, the Forest department has informed the Railways about the elephants herd, but the Railways neglected it. Data from Assam Forest department says, elephants deaths due to accidents are on rise in the State. The Asian elephants of Assam have been declared as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
